Lonavala and Khandala are about 85 km from Mumbai, roughly 2 hours each way by the expressway, which leaves most of the day for the hills. This day trip is a round trip with the same car and driver from pickup to drop, so you can move between viewpoints, caves and lakes at your own pace.

Places to fit into the day

  • Khandala: Rajmachi Point and Duke's Nose for views across the valley, and Amrutanjan Point above the ghat.
  • Lonavala: Tiger's Leap and Lion's Point for the cliffs and, in the monsoon, the clouds drifting through; Bhushi Dam, where water pours over the steps in the rains.
  • A little further: the rock-cut Karla and Bhaja Caves on the Pune side, or Pawna Lake.
  • Before you head home: chikki and fudge from the shops in town.

You will not see everything in one day, and you do not need to. Pick three or four places and enjoy them properly.

Timing the day

Leave Mumbai early, ideally by 7 am, so you reach the expressway ahead of the traffic and the viewpoints before the crowds. On monsoon weekends Lonavala itself can jam up, so a weekday visit is much calmer. On a Sunday, heading back by late afternoon helps you miss the worst of the evening traffic returning to Mumbai.

How it is billed

As a round trip, it is billed per kilometre against a daily minimum distance, plus a driver allowance, with the exact figures shown before you pay. 5% GST is added at checkout, and the fare breakdown shows whether toll and parking are included. The distance above is an estimate; your actual kilometres depend on where you go. See how round trip cabs work.

Practical notes

  • In heavy rain, some spots get very crowded or are closed by local authorities. Check before you go, and stay well back from the edges at viewpoints.
  • In the monsoon, carry an umbrella or raincoat, a change of clothes and shoes with good grip.
  • A sedan is enough for a couple. For a family or friends, choose an Ertiga or an Innova, and for a large group, the Tempo Traveller.
