Lonavala is about 85 km from Mumbai, roughly 2 hours by the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, which makes it the obvious quick escape from the city. Khandala sits just before it on the old highway, and most people see the two together.
When to go: the monsoon is when the hills turn green and the waterfalls run, and it is also when weekend traffic is at its heaviest. Leaving Mumbai early on a Saturday, or going on a weekday, makes a real difference. In heavy rain, popular spots such as Bhushi Dam get very crowded and can be closed by local authorities, so check before planning your day around them.
