From Thane, a Pune trip skips the island city altogether. The real question is how you reach the start of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway at Kalamboli. One way runs through Kalwa and Mumbra towards Shil Phata and Taloja; the other goes via Airoli and down the Thane–Belapur road through Navi Mumbai. Both can clog at peak hours, so the driver picks one based on the traffic on the day.
Where in Thane you start matters too. Pickups along Ghodbunder Road, in areas such as Kasarvadavali or Hiranandani Estate, add time on a road that is often slow, particularly in the mornings. Give your society name, wing and gate in the notes, because large complexes here often have several entrances.
Once you are on the expressway, the journey is the same as from Mumbai: the climb past Khopoli to Lonavala, then the run into Pune near Dehu Road. Mumbai to Pune is typically about 3 to 3.5 hours, and from Thane the total depends mostly on how quickly you reach Kalamboli, so a weekday start before the rush helps.
