Mahabaleshwar is about 265 km from Mumbai, and the drive usually takes about 5.5 to 6 hours. The usual way is the expressway towards Pune, then south on the Satara road before turning off through Wai and climbing the Pasarni ghat past Panchgani. Another route runs down the Konkan side through Mahad and Poladpur and climbs the Ambenali ghat. Ghat roads are slower in heavy rain, so it is worth discussing the route with the driver on the day.
Panchgani is on the way up, so many travellers combine the two. At the top, the viewpoints, Venna Lake and the road to Pratapgad fort are spread out, and a round trip keeps the same car with you for all of them instead of relying on local transport.
