Shirdi is about 240–250 km from Mumbai, roughly 5 to 6 hours by road depending on traffic and the route. There are two main ways to drive. One is the Nashik highway, climbing the Kasara ghat and then heading across through Sinnar. The other is the Samruddhi Mahamarg expressway, which you join near Bhiwandi and leave at the Shirdi exit. The driver chooses based on the traffic and weather on the day, but you can note a preference when you book.
Most pilgrims plan the day around darshan. Thursdays, weekends and festival days are busier, so allow more time in town then, and check the official Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust timings before you set out rather than relying on what you remember from an earlier visit.
A same-day trip is possible with a very early start, but it makes for a long day, and with elderly parents an overnight stay is usually easier on everyone. For either plan, a round trip keeps the same car and driver with you. If you are staying a few days, a one-way cab means paying only for your direction.
